Magyarness - photo competition
Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest (MOME) and Európa Pont – the new EU information and cultural centre – invite you to participate in a photo and video competition if you think you have a flair for photography, film or graphic design. We were wondering how you might capture essence of „Magyarness“ that surrounds you day by day. If you can show us your best visual impression of this „Magyarness“ do not hesitate to send us that picture/video/animation. But try to stay away from stereotypes; we want your unique insight, not a person spooning down Gulyás soup next to his Rubik’s cube in the puszta.
Your entry can be as abstract or as literal as you please in your chosen medium as long as it tells us something about what captured your imagination in Hungary the most, what you came to recognize as a Magyarness. There will be 4 categories in the competition, but we are positive that your artwork will relate to one of these. If you do not have a solid idea yet, let these inspire you. Sometimes black, often far from polite, but never boring. Did you tap into what makes them laugh? And what is it you find funny about your experiences in Hungary?
Winning entries will be exhibited in Európa Pont and at one of the biggest summer festivals in Budapest. The main price is a trip to the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (travel expenses and accreditation).
Deadline for submission: 31 April 2011

madeinhungary: Hungarian designers’ section at the Home Trend & Design exhibition
Madeinhungary is an independent, non-profit exhibition, which introduces Hungarian designers and craftsmen to the public. Since 2005, it has been held together annually with the Home Trend & Design exhibition, organized by textile designer Szilvia Szigeti and interior designer Tamás Radnóti.
The madeinhungary section is close in spirit to the Milanese Salon di Mobile: while the former focuses on Hungarian art novelties, the latter focuses on foreign ones, with exciting vocational programmes, fashion shows and concerts.
The madeinhungary section provides an overview of the works of Hungarian artists and craftsmen who work in different fields of design, presenting their products in individual- and limited series, and using various industrial processes. The exhibition is of particular importance, especially in today’s economic situation, when the designers – who in many cases do not have the proper industrial background and are struggling with a serious shortage of funds - develop their own collections individually. This time, the event will draw attention to those designers who are devoted to Hungarian material culture by presenting a variety works by almost 50 artists. The exhibition of course focuses on the artists whose works are closely related to interior furnishing, for example, furniture designers, interior designers, textile designers, ceramists, glass painters, goldsmiths, and so on.
Being true to previous years’ traditions, jewellery designers will present their products too.
This time, according to the final results of the restricted tender which was supported by PannonArts Gallery, 10 contemporary jewellery designers will introduce themselves. -

Karim Rashid, one of the most popular star designers of our time is visiting Budapest
Karim Rashid is visiting Budapest on 2 February 2011 to deliver an almost 90 minute public presentation on his works to an audience of 500, give interviews to illustrious design magazines and Internet portals, present a DJ show at Ötkert and meet the representatives of the Hungarian design scene. The inviting party includes noteworthy professional institutions like the Hungarian Intellectual Property Office, the Hungarian Design Council, Design Terminal and Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design.
Egyptian-born, New York resident Karim Rashid is a true 21st century creator, whose objects, interior designs and art projects grab the essence and atmosphere of digital culture. He reflects the zeitgeist both in form and function, for Rashid is not only a devout adherent of leading-edge technical novelties and a fan of plastics, but their conscious and environmentally aware user as well. His works are generally characterised as pieces of sensitive minimalism – a term he invented in the mid 90s, while his style is defined as sensualism.
He’s designed more than 3000 objects ranging from watches through DJ desks to dozens of furniture and carpets. Besides the New York restaurants and bars he designed, there are numerous, immediately recognisable places and hotels with a sort of brand patent with “Rashid trait” in many places around the world. The topmost common feature of his dynamic and colourful world is the use of round shapes. The objects – or blobjects as Rashid puts it – often resembling drops of water or bubbles present a sui generis, organic world. This mode of expression doesn’t recall the natural motifs of the 50s anymore, but rather expresses some sort of plasticity one feels when using the objects. The all-pervasive sensuality, or technically speaking sensualism displays a kind of post-pop character turned into a vividly flourishing cyber-whirl by typical contours and vibrant shades and graphic, often sacral symbols.

Exhibition of the Lucien Hervé and Rodolf Hervé prize winner
This year's co-winner of the biannual Lucien Hervé and Rodolf Hervé prize is Ákos Czigány (sharing it with the French photographer Alexis Cordesse). In 2010, Association Lucien Hervé et Rodolf Hervé annonced the prize on „The Language Of The City”, to which Ákos Czigány Ákos submitted his series titled „Skies - hommage á Hiroshi Sugimoto”. Ákos Czigány's works will be exhibited at French Institute Budapest from 14 January 2011 to 18 February 2011.
Following the initial selection by a committee of international experts, the jury decided on the winners from among the portfolios of 18 French and Hungarian photo artists. The prizes will be handed out at the opening of the prize-winning works on November 16, 2010 at the École Spéciale d’Architecture in Paris, under the auspices of the local month of photography: the „Mois de la Photo”.
This international prize, announced for the fourth time, aims at promoting the introduction of young photographers and strengthening photography's foothold in the sphere of culture, with special reagrd to the link between photography and architecture.
The mood of the buildings appearing in the pictures of Czigány's series might be familiar to us all, yet the rigorous edition and concentrated composition draws attention to something very different, making use of the emptiness filled with light, albeit embraced by the buildings that are part of our lives. In the given aperture another aperture appears, leading us to new directions. Light has basically some metaphysical content for Ákos Czigány, a content in which emptiness and overwhelming are simultaneously present.Viewing his pictures from the content aspect, we awe awestruck by the exceptional elegance yet stubborn consistence with which Czigány builds the visual world of archtitectural environment. His recent works take the viewer to a mystical world lined with light.

WAMP in December
In December there will be three WAMPs in a raw at Millenáris, and each and every one of them will be at least two times bigger than the usual ones. There will be more than 200 designers and thanks to the organization of Lila Füge – who is a well known gastro blogger – there will be a whole gastro section, representing all kind of design-gastro treats: chocolates, wines, olive oils, chutney, confectioneries, cookbooks.
So be prepared for overabundance which is not a bad thing, if you think about – especially around Christmas! It is always good to know that there are plenty of fresh, unique design objects that you can choose from! Tool up your trailer – but it is worthy of note that after you have packed it, you can also have all the presents wrapped into fancy design wrapping!
It is also possible to collect some ideas or presents even earlier! Thanks to the enthusiastic designers, from the 1st of December we will organise a special Advent Selection on WAMP Facebook page. Each day a new design object will appear – just like in a advent calendar – that you can buy at a 20% percent off at the fairs, or you could even win some of them!

PhotoMonth 2010 – A Festival by the Association of Hungarian Photographers
’According to our intention, originating from ten years ago, our festival is organized on a biannual basis. We are now proud to invite you to PhotoMonth 2010. This time it has not been an easy start, though. Economic disease has hindered the implementation of many a cultural event this past year. Still we have persisted and supported by our partners’ perseverance we have succeeded in providing for the continuity of the event.
Our colleagues at the Museum of Fine Arts, honoring the value of outstanding accomplishments in the field of photographic art, have undertaken to bring about a life-achievement exhibition in memory of Lucien Hervé whose onehundredth birth-anniversary is celebrated this year. In addition to this central event, November will also bring along several further exhibitions of equal standing: works by Martin Munkácsi will be showcased in the Ludwig Museum, while the exhibition by Károly Escher in the Mai Manó Ház is also expected to raise much public appeal. Besides these glimpses at the classic, the Festival offersinsights into several contemporary endeavors, both Hungarian and international.
As a founding member of Photofestival Union it is our ongoing intention to implement our projects in an international context. Accordingly, we are launching Fotóporta 6., providing an opportunity for photographers to introduce their works to domestic and international experts in the frame of a portfolio review session. This brochure is intended to assist visitors to navigate the maze of events PhotoMonth 2010 is bringing to the city.’ Zsolt Szamódy – Festival Manager -

Modeling Museums – International Model Festival Vol. 2
The 2010 Architectural Model Festival investigates the relationship of designer practices and cultural infrastructure.
Museums and art institutions have been at the forefront of recent urban development programs, establishing new nodes in the global network of cities. This trend has also shifted the role of such establishments from sites representing static national and local identities to open and activist public platforms inviting discourses on the cultures and identities of modern democracies.
The main topics of the festival explore this process through introducing current issues of Hungarian institutions and their architecture, and by raising internationally new, so far undeveloped issues. These themes also develop links between shared discourses of the architectural model as a genre and the museum as a platform.
The first topic represents significant projects and visions in contemporary museum architecture through models and presentations. The second topic investigates the transformation of the museum as an institution and public forum, using the model as a tool to analyze and represent complex relationships. The third topic explores the role of models and prototypes in design by showcasing traditional and cutting edge fabrication technologies in a hands-on, workshop environment.
